The Broward County Derby Grrls began as a vision: a vision of roller derby in South Florida. It is the brainchild of Domme E. Nation and Cate_Fear, who found each other when they went looking for roller derby. In August 2007 they created a myspace page for the Broward County Derby Grrls, and began planning "Rally the Rollers," a party to spread the word and recruit skaters. By September 8th, more than 300 people had friended the BCDG myspace page, and the Rally the Rollers party at New Moon Bar was packed.
The next night, the fledgling Derby Grrls skated together for the first time at an open skate at a local rink. Some of the skaters had been skating for the past 20 years, while others hadn't even thought about putting on skates in 20 years. But the bonds of sisterhood were quickly forged as the more experienced skaters helped the newer skaters, and everyone together learned the fine art of falling and then getting back up to keep skating.
Since their humble beginnings, the BCDG have been a growing force in roller derby, making it their mission to develop into one of the best programs in the nation. In their first season, they played a total of 13 bouts, which is almost unheard of for a first year team. They held their own tournament, attended the Fall Brawl II in Ft. Wayne, and brought teams from all over the nation to bout in South Florida.
What's next for the BCDG? As roller derby continues its path towards world domination, the BCDG has continued to grow and evolve. Our numbers are growing, and three times a week, skaters come together to practice everything from falling, to blocking, to knocking each other over. And now, that vision for roller derby has become a reality in South Florida.
